In defense of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Part 1

Updated: Jan 10, 2020

Ever since his birth, Prince Harry was big news. The "spare heir" to the British throne was catapulted into the spotlight by who his parents are, and their fame (or notoriety) must definitely have left an indelible mark on him. Despite his rebellious youth, he has grown into an amazing man who garners respect wherever he goes. When he talks, people actually listen.

I didn't know who Meghan Markle was until her engagement to Prince Harry was made public. It was my own fault, mostly, as I do not own a television set and did not follow her acting career. What background information I do have of her paints her as the type of person that I would vote for, if she should ever go into politics. She has solid values and principles and isn't afraid to voice her opinion, especially not if that opinion has merit. She comes from "ordinary" circumstances and made a name for herself in her own right. No coattails involved.

The couple suit each other well. They both had handfuls of charitable causes before they met, and they're both used to the spotlight. Also, no-one who has actually met the Duchess in person has anything bad to say about her. On the contrary, most of the people have a lot of praise for the woman.

What I don't get, then, is why the British tabloids would hunt her down like they do. Are they jealous because she is actually worth something in her own right, and not merely famous because of an accident of birth? Are they racist? No-one knows.

A lot has been made about her designer outfits. So what? I'm sure she wore designer clothing before she met Prince Harry, and if she's anything like me, she would have found a label that fits well, and stuck with it. (My labels aren't designer, but the argument still sticks.)

And - guess what, British Press!? - a baby shower is typically not something that you arrange for yourself! So if the Duchess' American friends want to host a lavish party in New York to celebrate the upcoming birth, it has nothing to do with you, whatsoever! In fact I think New York would have been the ideal spot, as it is halfway between London and Los Angeles. And most successful actresses have money to spend on designer baby outfits and extras for a good and respected friend and colleague. Get over that, already, won't you?

Stop comparing her to the Duchess of Cambridge all the time! Yes, Duchess Catherine has stepped into her royal position quite admirably, but the two women are not identical and can't be judged the same way. They have different senses of style and they bring different attributes to the table. Prince William and Prince Harry aren't the same, either! They have different roles and they need different partners.

This brings me to the next point. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are partners. They have each other's backs. There may be squabbles - I know of no married couples who are loving all the time - but I am sure their relationship is pretty solid. Looking for faults and fissures where there aren't any is petty. I think nit-picking would be a more apt word to use.

Much has been made of the fact that the Duchess is not a British citizen. I went and checked. She would only be eligible to APPLY for citizenship in May of 2021. So, if she were to receive her citizenship before then, it would not only be against British law, but I'm sure the press would have a lot to say about that, too.

In short, gossip rags, get over yourself! I like the Duchess of Sussex. In the 18 months since her marriage to Prince Harry she has done nothing to publicly embarrass the Throne, unlike other spoilt rotten royalty-by-birth. And if the Archbishop of Canterbury thinks she's cool, I'm not going to argue. Not even on Mondays.
